Pony Car Birthday Party: Shelby Mustang GT350 Turns 47 Today

If you’re a Shelby Mustang fan, today’s a day worth celebrating. 47 years ago today, Carroll Shelby officially debuted the 1965 Shelby GT350 Mustang to the press at Riverside International Raceway in California.

Although significant, it was hardly the first milestone in the making of the Shelby Mustang. Shelby American, then renowned for transforming AC Aces into venomous Cobras and aiding Ford’s GT40 racing program, signed on to yet another program: transform Ford’s new smash hit – the Mustang – into a performance machine eligible to compete in the SCCA’s Class B production sports car class. Some sources suggest the first twelve were built within a week, but it’s generally acknowledged that the first 100 examples – enough to appease the SCCA’s homologation rule – were built and ready for inspection by January 1, 1965.

GT350s were certainly a bit more powerful than other 1965 Mustangs built with the 289-cubic-inch V-8 (the combination of a four-barrel Holley carburetor, high-rise intake manifold, exhaust headers brought output to 306 hp), but power was but one portion of Shelby’s recipe for the Mustang. 200 pounds were stripped from the car by adding a fiberglass hood, and gutting the interior of insulation, superfluous trim, and rear seats. Stock springs were retained, but Koni dampers were fitted, as were a front anti-roll bar, beefy stabilizer bars for the rear axle, and a manual steering rack that used the quicker steering ratio from cars built with power assist. Options were limited to sportier wheel choices (steel rims were standard) and the famed blue Le Mans racing stripes – which, contrary to popular belief, very few were ordered with.

Compared to Ford’s own Mustangs – even the performance-oriented Mustang GT – Shelby’s concoction seemed a bit uncivilized when used on the street. Driven in anger, however, it proved a wildly different machine. A review in the May 1965 issue of Motor Trend noted the GT350 ”develops so much cornering force that the idiot light came on and the gauge wavered on several occasions due to oil surge in the pump.” MT also noted the car could accelerate from 0-60 mph in seven seconds.

MSRP for the street-legal 1965 GT350 cost about $4547 — nearly $1000 more than a comparable 1965 Mustang GT fitted with the K-code 289 V-8. Along with one prototype, 521 street-legal GT350s were built in 1965. A drop in the bucket when viewed alongside total Mustang production (559,451 units in 1965), but far more than it’s sibling, the race-spec GT350R — of which only 36 (including two prototypes) were made.

The GT350 nameplate quickly evolved into a more stylish, cosmopolitan road machine starting in 1966 (the R-model, for instance, was dropped that very year) and ultimately turned into a larger, gran turismo-like vehicle. As a result, the 1965 GT350 remains one of the purest, most involving Shelby models ever built. It’s wonder collectors are still scrambling after them today.

If you own a Porsche, Ferrari, BMW or other high end sports car chances are the performance parts and accessories shops you visit are some of the nicest in the industry. However if you drive a Camaro, Challenger, or Mustang the shops can range from junkyard like to cluttered and fitted with second hand display racks from a 1970's drug store. Sure the people are nice, the parts are good, but it always leaves you with a feeling that you just need to get your parts and get out.

A few retailers are trying to change that, Mustang Shop of Concord, CJ Pony Parts, and right here in my own back yard Mustangs & Fast Fords O.C. that recently opened. Co-Owner Paul Gammerino, long time car buff and all around nice guy, showed me around. "We wanted to create a place that Muscle Car enthusiasts would not just want to come to for parts and service, but as a destination." Paul Said. After seeing the place I think they have, this shop is impressive down to the details, everything screams Muscle Car Life Style, even the bathroom doors have Shelby stripes. The first thing you notice that is different than your average shop is the high end retail displays that feature products from the leading aftermarket restoration parts companies, like California Pony Cars, Scott Drake, and TMI. Also featured prominently in the showroom is Paul's own Mustang Club Of America award winning Mustang Coupe that he restored himself to concours standards. There is a classic Ford Roadster project sitting in another corner of the clean and well organized showroom, as well as a large roped off area that has a number of parts laid out. Paul explained that MM&F will be building a classic Shelby GT350 (Clone) live in the showroom. This should be a very cool project to watch as customers will be able to see the M&FF O.C. techs build the car live. But unlike most retail parts stores serving the industry M&FF O.C. also has a full service shop that can handled everything from routine service to complete restorations. Paul also filled me on on the progress on adding a paint booth to the service department. We are currently still awaiting approval by the city, but we will be installing a state of the art paint booth that will allow us to truly provide full service for all classic Ford parts and restoration needs." he said. While I was there, the service departments two lifts were occupied by a late model Mustang, a classic F100, and the staff was working on tuning a classic Ford Fairlaine.

K.A.R. was founded in 1978 as K.A.R. and Associates by Gordon Roberts

and his son Kevin Allen Roberts. K.A.R. is actually Kevin's initials.

Kevin was 18 years old at the time and in love with the Classic

Mustang. His personal car was a 1965 Mustang convertible which he

restored himself. The business's first location was a rented building

and grounds in Westerville, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. The

business grew steadily for 8 years prompting the purchase of its

current facility in Columbus. In addition to parts sales the business

also focused on used parts sales and Classic Mustang car sales. Kevin

personally parted out over 100 Classic Mustangs learning every nut,

bolt, and screw and where they go on a Mustang. This led to restoring

Mustangs for customers as well as to resale. K.A.R. and Associates

employed a small group of repair and restoration technicians. The

business continued to grow over the years as did Gordon's and Kevin's

knowledge and expertise. Unfortunately Gordon's health became an issue

and he needed to slow down.

In 1994 George Waydo purchased the assets of K.A.R. and Associates and

renamed the company K.A.R. Auto Group. Kevin was retained as an equity

owner and Judy Moehl was brought on board as office manager and equity

owner. Judy was a former executive assistant for a senior VP in a

fortune 100 company and really buttoned up administratively. George's

wife Mary was later brought on board as book keeper as the company

continued to grow.

K.A.R. AUTO GROUP's focus continues to be Classic Mustang parts sales,

Service, repair and parts installations on classic Mustangs, and

Classic Mustang car sales. Since 1994 K.A.R. Auto Group has sold over

1000 Classic Mustangs. K.A.R. remains the only Classic Mustang dealer

that produces and makes available a 30 minute thoroughly narrated DVD

It was on March 9th 1964 that the first Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan. On April 17th the Mustang was released to the public an important milestone in automotive history.

A brief history of the Mustang:

Lee Iacocca had the basic idea for what would become the Mustang as early as 1960, his concept was to create a inexpensive personal car that had the flash and good looks of the first T-Birds but would seat four people, and it had to retail for the price of an economy car. He called the concept "A sports car for the masses". His first attempt was to build a T-Bird like Convertible on the Falcon Chassis, however, the small child size seats did not work with his vision of a true for passenger sports car. Ford needed something to pit against the Chevy Corvair Monza that was attracting the youth market with its bucket seats and sporty good looks. Ford was a little apprehensive to spend the money to tool up for a brand new and untested car in a relatively new segment, they still had memories of the Edsel looming in the back of the top brasses minds.

Iacocca pushed and Ford gave him his four passenger sports car. The car would fit somewhere between the popular British Imports like the MGB GT and the Ford Fairlane. The design team went to work and first turned out a radical Mustang I prototype that would would prove to be a wild promotional tool and engineering show piece with a V4 mid-engine the car looked like a early forefather to the Fiat X 1/9. While the car was very cool, it was not a 4 passenger sports car for the masses.

Original Mustang I

After about a year of work the studios turned out seven different clay models, the one chosen was called the Cougar and was designed by Ford Division Studios designers David Ash, Gail Halderman, and Joe Oros. The car was also called the Turino in some rendering both the Cougar and Turino name would live on in other product lines. The early project code name was another name familiar with Mustang fans "Project T-5" a name that would later be revived for some Export Mustangs. Several running prototypes of the Cougar were built including the one that would become the Mustang II show car. All of this was done in just 18 months, the car went from concept in about September 1962 to production in March 1964.

Ford launched a massive advertising campaign in print, television, newspapers, even Time and Newsweek ran cover stories on the New Mustang at the same time. Ford even purchased all the advertising for the 9:30-10:00 PM time slot on all three networks. This with the over 2600 newspaper ads and 24 major magazine ads was the largest and most overwhelming media introduction for a new car in history. The Mustang went on to become one of the most popular and important cars in the history of the automobile, it sparked the pony car wars and the muscle car era. Without it we may not have the Camaro, Cuda, and the GT 350 would not have been. The popularity of the Mustang has been so strong that the aftermarket today produces almost every part needed to build a new Mustang from the ground up, including complete bodies.

Although we have heard no official details about the new car from Ford, Autoblog spotted the 2011 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special at the Detroit Auto Show and decided to snap a few pictures of it and give their opinion on what to expect. According to Autoblog the 2011 California Special looks to be a wheel and appearance package much like the 2007 GT/CS. It features a new larger, more aggressive looking chin spoiler that is painted semi-flat black, a polished horizontal bar style front grill, new lower rear facia with GT500 style diffuser, and taller decklid spoiler. As with the previous GT/CS the 2011 model also features its own specific wheel design, a 10 spoke version, and of course special GT/CS graphics. Classic Mustang Rally Car

Rally races in East Africa are a little different than in other places. Watching for elephants crossing the road is a common sight, as are many of the more pedestrian cars found in that part of the world. What is does stick out is Ian Duncan’s 1968 Mustang rally car.
Former Safari Rally winner and multiple Kenya National Rally champion, Ian Duncan has entered his crowd drawing 1968 Mustang coupe again in this year’s Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally which takes place November 22nd through December 1st, 2009.

Powered by a race built 400hp 302 V8 and backed up by a 4-speed manual transmission, the Mustang has a beefed up suspension, skid plates, and a host of other mods that make it survive while flying across the wilds of Kenya and Tanzania. Ian Duncan and his co-driver have campaigned the Mustang in previous rally events. In 2007 he was in 3rd when he snapped the input shaft of his transmission during the race.

Termed the “World Greatest Classic Car Rally”. The event will cover a some 2500 miles taking the Mustang through the remote and beautiful landscapes of Kenya and Tanzania. “I am really looking forward to driving the Ford Mustang which will be much better prepared since we have learnt a lot about the car in the 2007 event and also the KNRC before we started to drive the Nissan Patrol. It should give me all the things I love in rallying in one event” said Duncan.

One of the reasons a car like the classic Mustang can be the crowd pleaser of this event is because it is geared specifically for cars built before 1974. The organizers wanted to avoid the powerful turbo charged and 4WD drive cars. The stages, or sections would be longer and the service crews and back up would be limited just like in the early days. It is about nostalgia of the Safari. That is pretty cool if you think about it. Man, machine, and wild animals that are hungry for meat.

2009 SEMA Show Preview: 2010 Steeda Q Mustang Series Unleashed

LAS VEGAS — Specific details are sparse, but Mustang customizer Steeda has announced that it will unleash its 2010 Q Series Mustang next month at the 2009 SEMA Show here. The Florida tuner showed off two images of the Q Mustang, revealing a classic-looking black-and-red pony car with a gaping front airdam.
No specifications were released, but observers are expecting extensive upgrades to the suspension and horsepower. The 2010 Q Series makes its official debut on November 3.
"In all of our Q-Series of high-performance Mustangs, we never compromise or take shortcuts," said Dario Orlando, the founder of Steeda Autosports, in a statement.
The Mustang tuner started ratcheting up its take on the 2010 Mustang in July, showing off the Sport Edition, which featured new wheels and tires, graphics and minor suspension upgrades.

2011 5.0???

This week has been filled with yet more revelations of new technology coming to the 2011 Mustang. Namely, Ford has two new engines headed for the 2011 Mustang that are a breath of fresh metal. The revolution starts with a new 3.7 liter DOHC V6 which is rumored to power out 315hp for the base 2011 Mustang. This will put the entry level model at a higher horsepower level than many legendary and iconic “Muscle Mustangs” of the past.

We’re talking the 1965 Shelby GT-350 at 271-306hp, 1969 BOSS 302 at 290hp, and all Fox Bodied Mustang 5.0 GT and Cobras ranging from 157-240hp. At 315hp this new base engine even out-powers many of the naturally aspirated 4.6 liter DOHC V8 engines found in the SVT Cobras and Mach 1 during the SN-95 years! When you consider this is the base Mustang you can get for under $25,000 with some options that is pretty remarkable.

This new engine has a number of technologies that get that power up including dual-overhead cams with variable valve timing. This allows infinite tuning of the cams on the fly by the engine control module. It is also rumored that direct injection is the key to that extra power above and beyond the 273hp that the 3.7 V6 puts out in Lincoln applications.

What this means is that the Mustang V6 is likely to no longer have the stigma of being the low man on the totem pole. With 315hp, the V6 would prove a credible option for enthusiasts and frugal buyers alike. If Ford sees fit to give this thing a nice dual exhaust and pair it with a 6-speed manual as they plan with the next generation V8, we have it made.

Speaking of that next generation 5.0 liter V8, there has been a lot of news and rumor about the upcoming “Coyote” engine. The engine is a completely new architecture, very compact in design, and shares little to nothing with the current “modular” V8 family. The new 5.0 liter engine will be used in both the F-Series trucks and in the Mustang for 2011. The current 4.6 and 5.4 modular V8’s are believed to be going away for both cars and trucks. The new 6.2 liter V8 will replace both the 5.4 V8 and the V-10 in the F-Series.

The new DOHC 4-valve engine appears from spy photos to feature dual variable valve timing which helps put power at or above the 400 mark. That means both intake and exhaust cams can be individually timed for optimum settings in all conditions. It might have direct injection for future applications, but prototype photos appear to show standard port injection. There have been news accounts however of the engine being tested with direct injection and turbo charging, but the first show of the new 5.0 will be naturally aspirated.

The good news is that the extra power does not come at the cost of efficiency. The new V8 will meet or exceed the current 3V V8 in mpg. This will in part be achieved by mating the engine to a 6-speed manual transmission which should make many a Mustang fan happy. The compact size of the engine itself will also leave room for modders to really get creative under the hood.

Other news on the wire this week is that the next revision of the Shelby GT-500 will use an aluminum block to save weight. What is not known is whether this will be a version of the current 5.4 liter supercharged V8 or whether Ford is going for a force-fed version of the new 5.0. In either case a substantial weight reduction for the GT-500 would go a long way to upgrading performance and handling as well as casting off its image as being shall we say “portly”.

If all of these technological dreams come to pass in the next year, the powers that be at Ford will have answered virtually every criticism of the Mustang that has existed. That is with the exception of the live axle rear suspension. While there is much debate in the press, in the enthusiast circles, and even at Ford about whether the Mustang should have a modern day rear suspension, one thing is clear. The rest of the world and even Ford has decided that an IRS is the best solution.

The Crown Victoria and Town Car are going out of production soon, leaving the Mustang as the only mainstream production car in the world with a live axle. While most Ford spokespeople and engineers we have talked to sell us on the notion that an IRS isn’t all that great or necessary, it hasn’t stopped them from installing it in every SUV they build and even one of their pick-up trucks. If you read the brochures for the Explorer, Sport-Trak, or the Expedition the benefits of IRS are extolled like virtues from heaven. Yet their own halo sports car does not need it? Something is amiss.

We have been told by Ford to look at Grand Am where Mustangs with live axles race and win against cars with IRS from companies like BMW, Porsche, and others. This may be true, but one has to remember that a smooth race track and the driving environment of public roads are two different worlds. Once off the race track we have bumps, pot holes, railroad tracks, expansion joints, and surface transitions that make that live axle dance. These conditions all remind a Mustang driver every day of that piece of 14th century design underpinning their driving experience.

The point of an IRS is not necessarily always about performance, but rewarding the driver with confidence, stability, and refinement that is expected in a modern day performance car. With the amount of power these Mustangs have today, an IRS would not only increase safety by a huge margin, but also market appeal in a world full of IRS equipped Chevy Camaros, Nissan 370Zs, Corvettes, and yes even a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. And when you consider that some high performance Mustangs are now in the $50,000-80,000 price range, it really has become the time give the horse some new legs.

With its new sculpted body the Lee Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang is one of the hottest pony cars on the market. However, as expected it's one of the most expensive too. I Legacy, the company in charge of building the car, recently announced that pricing for each of the 45 examples available will start at $89,950. That's about $10,000 more than the GT500KR or more than triple the base price of a 2010 Mustang GT. If you want items like the Ford Racing supercharger or the big brake kit, you're looking at nearly six figures. Are we surprised? If anything, we're surprised the price tag isn't more. Creating custom coachwork for a vehicle isn't cheap, especially when the cost is only spread over 45 cars.

If you are a wholesale company content by industry leaders would be perfect, if you are targeting the end users installation videos, interviews, and games may be more effective. A number of business owners do not see a benefit in active social media, they have a MySpace or a Facebook page already, but it has not been updated in months or in some cases years. You may be a manager or employee that has been trying to get your company on board with Social Media, but the boss just does not see the value in having an employee "playing" on the internet all day. However, not focusing on this key segment of the aftermarket enthusiast will only hurt your business in the long run as the world moves more and more digital. Remember that majority of your customers are online and with social media they are talking about your business. If you don't believe that Social Media affects your business you may want to spend some time on Google researching your company. You may be surprised to find that countless web pages, blogs, and other sites are talking about your company, products, show cars, customer service, and issues. Browse through the forums, message boards, and blogs that are talking about your product, and then ask yourself what you are doing to leverage this content. If a customer has purchased a product from you and is having a technical problem, wouldn't you like to respond to that customer first? If a customer has posted a great review of your product, shouldn't you share that in your monthly e-newsletter or post it in your blog or on your webpage? Type your company name in Google and see what comes up. A client of mine ran across a website called xyzcompanysucks.com, an entire website created by an angry customer. It was dedicated to letting the world know how he felt he was cheated. The site is no longer updated; however, it is still up almost two years later, and still comes up in the searches when you type in that company name. If you cannot see the value of directly interacting with the most passionate consumers in the industry, at this point, I don't think you ever will. Positive conversations are not being maximized, while complaints are gaining support from other members of the community and not being addressed quickly.Look at two postings from the same online automotive forum below (the name of our competitor has been obscured)

As can be expected the negative post had over 681 views and countless responses in a matter of days. A number of other members also posted their stories in the thread, about the bad service and poor product quality fanning the flames against the company. I have also included one of the follows up that built on the original post. While the positive story had about the half the number of views, it was locked as a sticky on the thread (locked at the top of the discussion board so all members can see it). Being seen as a service to the community the post is still locked at the top of the page two months after the original post. That is due in part to our Social Media marketing plan that has California Pony Cars active on that message board. The positive thread was posted by a member of the community without our request, and several other members posted their positive experiences with California Pony Cars parts.

If you think they just go after manufactures, you would be wrong, look at this posting on the same site about a Mustang Parts Retailer. You should know when this stuff is being said about your company, that way you can attempt to correct the issues. Sure every once in awhile you will get a nut, but if you see chatter about poorly packed items, or prices, or shipping time, it will give you an idea on where you can improve. On the reverse you can see a lot of positive remarks too and they are great to share with your team.

What manager or owner would not love to have that kind of direct feedback from the consumer, in the case of the postings above both companies are wholesalers with little direct public interaction or feedback. Now I believe in traditional advertising in print and other media, in fact we have a brand new ad campaign that is designed to drive our customers into the showrooms of our dealers; however, Social Media is a part of our overall marketing plan.When developing your social media strategy you should begin first with understanding the audience. Spend a few weeks on online scouting, observing, and developing an understanding for the online communities. Spamming sites will have a major negative effect, however, if you contribute to the site and don't hide who you are the communities are generally very receptive. Establishing yourself as the expert on the forum will add creditability to your company. Once you have all of this information, your Blog, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace can be tailored for marketing.

Everyone in the car hobby is always looking for that rare"barn find" but if you know how to look they are far more common then you may think. Over the years I have found dozens of ultra rare cars, from a forgotten Boss 302, to classic Austin Healey's with racing history and everything in between. There are always stories about car hunters, even some T.V. shows have popped up that make it seem like finding an old car is a magical gift. To make the show or story interesting there is always a cloud of mystery to how they find these diamonds in the rough, and they pretend that these cars are so few and far between that it has to be a full time job.

Well...You don't have to root around behind peoples barns, get chased by farm dogs, or pick through abandoned buildings hoping to uncover some hidden gem. As someone that has been finding, restoring, selling, trading, and racing old cars for the last 14 years I have some idea on what it takes to find them. The professional car hunters will not be happy, but here are some tips for first time car hunters:

1. Run a ad in the local paper: Wanted 1965-1966 Ford Mustang in need of work. You will be surprised how many calls you will get from people wanting to get that old car out of their drive way. One such call yielded a low mileage unrestored Fastback V8, with power steering complete and rust free for only $1,000. (Photo of Black Fastback purchased for $1,000)

(Note: You can always spot the car hunters ads because they have some story like "looking for a car like my wife and I had when we were first married" or the best one "father and son looking for project to bond over". These 9 times out of 10 professional car buyers. They also will stress "Privet Party" in their ads, that way when they show up with their three car hauler the sellers will be more comfortable.)

2. Go exploring: Take a drive, if you have GPS turn off the "Allow Freeways" option and set off through some older parts of town. On my drives I have seen everything from Boss 302's to a classic Ferrari. They may not all be for sale, but knock on some doors. You can always copy down the address and send a letter to the owner. A letter is how I once picked up a 1972 Mustang Sportsroof 351C that ran and drove for FREE. 3. Craigslist and Ebay: Yes everyone knows about these sites, but I have found some great deals on them just by changing the way I search. Many people will type in "1965 Mustang" and you may find some cars, but so will everyone else. Search by year "1965", search common misspellings and typos, and search models. You will be surprised what you find, a guy may list a 1970 Mustang Sportsroof as "70 msutang slopeback". In searching this way I found a complete V8, 1970 Mustang Sportsroof for $1,500. 4. Make Connections: Make friends with some local salvage guys, you may be able to get a car and pay them a finders fee before they have to process it as salvage. You never know what you may find while driving to your cousins house, or helping a friend move, or behind the local repair shop.

These are not stories from the 10 or 20 years ago. I have found all of these cars in the last 5 years and with very few exceptions have I never paid more then $1,500 for a project. My current 1974 Fiat X1/9 (project Budget Elise) was a running driving car purchased for just $900, and my vintage Formula Vee with Cal-Club race history was pulled from a back yard for $500.

I have found the most amazing cars when not looking for them, if you run an ad that says "Wanted: Rare Boss 302 Mustang" you have just told the guy that has that car rotting in his back yard it is rare. If you run an ad "Wanted: 1968-1973 Mustang unrestored" you may get a call from that guy with the Boss, Mach 1, or K code.

Don't let the "experts" try to tell you that their are no more cars out there, that you need to just buy a complete car, because all the good ones have been restored. For every deal that I passed up, I found two more, and remember even today, old cars are being parked because of mechanical failure, or the purchase of a new car. I have purchased cars that had been sitting for just a few months before the owner lost interest and parked it. So take your time, if it is a project car it may take a few months to find the right car for you, but just remember there are still lots of cars out there.

Ford Racing announces plans for 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet

At last year's SEMA show, Ford unveiled the latest Mustang to join the Ford Racing stable, the FR500CJ Cobra Jet. The purpose-built drag racer came standard with go-fast parts from the Ford Racing catalog, including a 400 horsepower version of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 (de-tuned to meet specifications needed for NHRA's AA Stock class) and a drag-specific wheel and tire combination. The 2009 model was a success both with customers and on the track. Ford Racing sold the entire run of fifty cars in less than two weeks, and it won its very first race at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA back in February. Building on that success, Ford Racing announced today that it will be building a 2010 version of the Cobra Jet, with production to begin during the fourth quarter with deliveries taking place in early 2010. The base price is expected to be less than $75,000, and once again production will be limited to just fifty units. Like the 2009 model, the 2010 Cobra Jet will be modified with all Ford Racing parts including the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that is now rated at 425 horsepower. Perhaps the most exciting news is the availability of an optional 475 horsepower aluminum block motor that we dearly hope will somehow find its way into a production car. The Mustang Community has Lost a Friend

We just found out today that a long time friend and CPC dealer Tom Thomas has passed away. His passion and enthusiasm for the Mustang and the people that loved them will be missed. Our condolences are extended to the Thomas family and friends.

Obituary:

Thomas J. Thomas Jr., an attorney and boating and automobile enthusiast who founded companies based on those interests, died April 26. He was 53.

He was a 1978 graduate of Plymouth State College and earned a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law School. Mr. Thomas later became a partner with the law firm of Thomas, Utel, Vandewater and Raiche, PC. He then went on to work at Thomas and Pellenz law firm until he went into private practice at his own firm, Thomas and Associates. He was involved with the delegation for National Homeland Security between the United States and Russia and attended many conferences in Washington D.C. and Russia.

A lifelong boating enthusiast, he founded Thomas Marine Supply Co. He also owned and operated Monster Ford Performance Products.com. His passion was Ford Mustang automobiles and he loved to drive his Roush Mustang around town.

Technical Notice: Fuel Rail Cover Instruction Revision

It has come to our attention that retail customers have been having an issue when installing our fuel rail cover kits on 2005+ Ford Mustang GT's. The issue comes from the wording used in our installation instructions, that has lead a few people to believe that they must remove the pressurized fuel line in order to install the Driver Side Fuel Rail Cover, spilling fuel on the painted surface; resulting in bubbling and peeling of paint.

While we have only had two such cases since the products introduction, we have decided to address the confusion by revising our instructions.

Cash for Clunkers: How will it effect your Mustang business?

There is a lot of talk about the new cash for clunkers legislation that aims to take older vehicles off the road. Many aftermarket parts suppliers, independent repair, and body shops have been wondering how this will effect their business. In our industry the Mustang & Classic Ford restoration/performance market reports suggest that there should be little change and there is even potential for growth. A report by BB&T suggests that most people that will be taking advantage of the program will be lower income drivers, market reports suggest that this demographic does not spend a significant amount on none-essential automotive products. Since most Mustangs from 1979-2004 still demand a higher resale value on the open market, most drivers will opt to sell vehicles in place of trading them in.
Other factors on the amount of vehicles that would be scrapped include buyers qualifying for new car financing, with credit already hard to obtain, low income drivers will have a hard time finding an approval for a new car loan. Even if a consumer went from 18 mpg to 30 mpg the savings in fuel would be less than $50 a month. Many people driving 15-20 year old cars are not going purchase $30,000 hybrids, using only the rebate as a down payment a $28,900 Ford Escape Hybrid for five years will cost nearly $575 a month at 7% interest. Here in California most of the Cash Ford Clunkers rebate will be eaten up by newly passed sales tax hikes and higher registration fees that in some parts of the state can add almost 13% to the purchase price of a new car.
If you are still concerned that Cash Ford Clunkers programs could effect your business, there are several ways you can diversify your product offering to appeal to a broader market. If you only offer classic parts perhaps expand into late model, if you specialize in Fox Bodies expand into other 70’s-90’s pony cars such as the Camaro. The only vehicles we may see diminished in our industry are later model Mustangs, however, the lower value cars in this segment such as the 2.3 four cylinder Mustang’s of the 80’s and 90’s may not offer enough of a fuel savings to justify the car payment. These programs will not be removing large SUV’s off the road, and will more then likely be taken advantage of by people that were in the market for a new car anyways.
Where the aftermarket may see a major benefit is with as many as 3,000 more dealerships closing, maintenance parts will need to be supplied by aftermarket shops. If you happen to be in a region where a dealership is closing you may want to start aggressively promoting your company as a alternative parts, repair, and maintenance facility. The aftermarket may benefit from this bill by receiving good running parts cars that would be sent to dismantlers, however, nether of the bills have a clear outline of what would happen to the “clunker” once it is turned in. With out clear definitions on this aspect of the legislation the environmental gains could be limited or even detrimental if vehicles are not properly dismantled and disposed of, or if they simply end up being exported to Mexico and Central America the overall “carbon emissions” will only increase world wide.

California Pony Cars' Line Of Dress-Up Bits Really Wakes Up The Visual Flavor On S197 Mustang GT Engines

When the entire line of California Pony Cars underhood dress-up goodies are installed, the drab Three-Valve 4.6L engine bay looks noticeably better. Included are a finned fuse-box cover, shock tower covers, battery and master cylinder covers, a pair of radiator-cover extensions, a pair of fuel-rail covers, and a plenum cover made by Ford Racing. There's also a CPC throttle-body cover that is actually an extension of the Ford Racing plenum cover.
In our Aug. '08 issue, we showed a hood-lift kit being installed on an S197 Mustang. Made by California Pony Cars, the kit eliminates the hood-prop rod and makes opening the car's hood considerably easier.

We're returning to Cal Pony Cars' product line once again for this How-To, but now we're focusing on the company's line of underhood dress-up parts for '05-'09 Mustang GTs. We mention the hood-lift kit because one of the items we show being installed here can't be used unless the hood-lift kit is in place.

Though the radiator-cover extensions require that the hood-prop rod be removed, you could still install the driver side and save the passenger-side extension for when the hood-lift kit is installed at a later time.

Whichever way you decide to go as far as the radiator-cover extensions and hood-lift kit are concerned, all the parts are top-quality and look great, too. They're also relatively easy to install as we had everything in place on our '06 GT subject car in about two to three hours.

This is the plenum cover (center) and fuel rail covers. On the outside are the metal mounting brackets for the fuel rail covers. In front is the CPC-made throttle-body cover.

Our 8,000-mile '06 GT convertible is still basically a new car, and we were very interested in getting the CPC parts installed to dress up the plain-looking engine compartment.

We began with the shock-tower covers, which are identified by "D" and "P" for driver and passenger side. Note the concave contoured area. These must face the fender for proper hood frame clearance. The flange around the bottom is stepped to fit around the structural support panels. It's recommended that you apply assembly grease to the retention tabs. While grasping the outer part of the cover, rotate it back and forth while pressing down at the center with the palm of your hand until you feel the cover pop into place.

We next installed the finned fuse-box cover, which basically installs on top of the factory cover. Shown here with the tape applied at each corner, the factory cover (removed from the car) was dropped into the finned cover.

The two covers joined together are then reinstalled on the car as a single part.

Moving to the battery and master-cylinder covers, start by gently bending the sheet-metal brackets down slightly so the loom clip is below the level of the cowl. That will keep them out of the way of the covers.

The covers fit right into place. This is the master-cylinder cover for the driver side.

Next, remove the pair of factory trim fasteners. After the screw is removed, the clip is then lifted out. There are two screws and clips on each side of the car.

Complete the installation of the covers by reinstalling the trim fasteners. They press into place and are then gently tightened with a screwdriver. Be careful not to strip the plastic threads.

The most involved installation work comes with the fuel-rail covers, but it's still fairly straightforward. First, remove the oil dipstick, then pull the wiring-harness retaining clips off the studs on the valve covers.

Identify the marked driver- and passenger-side stainless-steel brackets, position them in place over the valve covers (driver side shown here), and push them evenly in place over the bare studs on the valve covers. The brackets must bottom out on the studs for proper alignment of the plastic rail covers. Push the harness jam clips back onto the studs, making sure the large wiring harness is on the inside of the bracket.

Another smaller harness needs to be temporarily lifted off to allow fitment of the covers. Do this on either side of the intake plenum.
The passenger-side cover is now placed into position over the mounting bracket.

Align the holes in the cover and the mounting bracket to allow installation of the Allen-head screws. Be careful not to drop the screws while trying to get them started. Securely tighten them with the correctly sized Allen wrench (shown here).

Install the two provided longer studs to accept the rear mounting ears of the intake-plenum cover. Remove the shorter studs and install the longer ones, being very careful not to drop them through the slots between the runners in the intake manifold.

To install the driver-side cover, the air-intake box needs to be removed. Do this by removing the bolt that holds it in place on the inner fender. The plug for the mass-air sensor and the tube going between the air-intake plenum and driver-side valve cover also need to be removed.

For added clearance to install the cover, the tube between the valve cover and the intake-manifold plenum needs to come off. It reinstalls over the cover once the cover is in place.

With everything unplugged, the air-intake tube is then removed.

With everything out of the way, the driver-side cover is placed into position and bolted to the bracket in the same way as the passenger-side cover.

With the fuel-rail covers in place, we started on the intake-plenum cover and extension by removing the throttle-body bolts.

The plenum cover is set into place and partially installed by pushing the rear-side brackets with grommets over the mounting studs.

Install and carefully tighten the supplied nuts onto the rear studs that hold the back of the cover in place.

Next, reinstall the throttle-body bolts through the holes and grommets in the plenum cover. Don't tighten all the way as the throttle-body cover fits over the partially tightened bolts.

Place the cover in position and tighten the bolts by accessing them through the cover with a -inch-drive ratchet, socket, and extension as shown. Be careful not to over-tighten the bolts, which could break the tabs on the inside of the throttle-body cover. Complete the installation of the rail and plenum covers by reinstalling the air-intake tube and other ancillary parts.

The radiator cover extensions are a snap to install. The included bolts, which replace the stock ones, are painted black to match. Simply remove the two bolts on the driver side, drop the cover in place, and install the new bolts.

With the bolts and prop rod removed, the passenger-side cover drops into place. It could also be installed at a later time when installing a hood-lift kit, or the hood-lift kit could be installed first.

Association Staff Gets to Know California Pony Cars Inc.

Staff from SEMA’s membership, Show and research departments paid a visit to California Pony Cars (CPC) in Ontario, California, early December last year. The SEMA group sat down with company owner and founder Ray Harrington and general manager Tony Gonzalez to learn a little more about what the business does, how it operates and how SEMA can help it thrive.
“We are proud to make products that allow our customers the opportunity to recapture the special feelings of a time long past,” Harrington said. “Mustangs remind us of a time when the United States was innocent and open and the future was unlimited.” Harrington shared the story of how he was introduced to the Mustang and how CPC came into being. He had founded Harrington Mold Inc. in 1976 when he was a determined, young journeyman mold maker who had gained the experience needed to become a successful entrepreneur by working at six Southern California mold manufacturing job shops. “Mold makers working in a job shop build molds for component parts for all types of products that they see and touch and use every day,” he said. “Many of these products are quite successful, and most mold makers and shop owners quietly wish they could taste some of that success for themselves.”

Harrington believes that most mold shops have at least one mold stored on a pallet somewhere in their shop for a product that never made it off the ground. He said that he became aware of a need for higher-quality restoration parts than were currently available when he restored his wife’s ’66 Mustang Fastback. During the buildup, Harrington had a chance encounter with another enthusiast who gave him the benefit of his industry knowledge about which parts might be needed. That was all it took to start a second venture. California Pony Cars was born, and it has turned into a successful business as well as a labor of love.

The majority of the products available through CPC are made in the United States, including the horse-and-corral grille emblem held here by general manager Tony Gonzalez.

“My first project was to manufacture the standard ’64½–’66 Mustang outside rearview mirror,” Harrington said. “I found out that the Taiwanese import product being supplied to the marketplace was inherently defective, lasting only a very short time, and I believed that I could make a better one and sell it to everyone who currently had the Taiwanese mirror. I was right, and I sold a lot of mirrors in a very short period of time.” The next project was a reproduction gas cap for the ’65 Mustang, followed by a string of other products. “With the mirror selling so well, I decided to build ’66 and ’67 Mustang gas caps as well,” Harrington said. “And it went on and on until California Pony Cars now produces more than 350 different products, including ’64½–’73 and ’05–’10 Mustang parts as well as a line of industrial products. California Pony Cars is licensed by Ford to sell their copyrighted and trademarked items. We employ about 30 people and have complete manufacturing, assembly and warehouse capability within our 17,000-ft. building. The mold shop builds 95% of its tools for outside customers and continues to support our California Pony Cars business as well.”

The majority of the products available through CPC are made in the United States. Harrington and Gonzalez offered the SEMA group a tour of the facility, where the association staff saw everything from a ’67 horse-and-corral grille emblem to CPC’s new ’05–’08 Mustang GT engine cover kit. The group also learned firsthand that CPC does not sacrifice quality for price and how the company is able to create innovative new products and exact reproductions of original parts.
“Diversification has truly been the key to our past success,” Harrington said, “and we believe it is the key to California Pony Car’s future.”

Harrington explained CPC’s operations to the SEMA group during a tour of the company’s facility in Ontario, California. The SEMA staffers learned how CPC is able to create innovative new products and exact reproductions of original parts.

As a major supplier to the restoration industry California Pony Cars is always testing and comparing our Made in the USA Premium Restoration Line, to that of the competition. We placed a clandestine order for some of the competitions 1967 Ford Mustang GT Grille Bars, and 1965-1966 Ford Mustang Wood Grain Wheel Center. To say the least we are very secure in our claim that our US made product is of far superior quality to what is coming from Asia, be it India, China, or another far off land.

The competitions products came in today and we pulled them right out of the package, it was shocking. We also pulled a few items from inventory, right off the shelf and shot some side by side photos showing why CPC's Made in the USA Premium Restoration Products are considered the best in the industry.

Not as dramatic a difference as the 1967 Grille Bars, but look at the details. Remember this is front and center every time you drive your classic. Firstly; the Import product comes as a kit, requiring you to put it together (Note: the loose emblem from the one on the left one of the screws supplied did not really fit well and could not get the lens tight against the bezel. CPC's are assembled at our Southern California factory and are shipped ready to install.) Secondly: The metal is not brushed as the factory, the pockmarks from the casting process are left in place and coated over. Also Look at the size, and attention to detail of CPC's lettering, the import brand lettering bleeds over into the rim of the bezel.

Dear California Pony Cars Staff,

I purchased a strut kit after many conversations with one of your dealers last year... it had to 'be developed' for the GT500... and the winters in Wisconsin delayed the installation until just yesterday. I have to say I am extremely happy with the product and the design. It looks awesome! Enclosed you will find some photos I have taken today, which you may feel free to use as you desire, that show the install, and in particular, the additional headroom afforded with the hood in the raised position with your product. (That is a yardstick sitting on top of the blower and it still clears!)

The balance of the hood is perfect at any position above about half way open... and the struts allow for 'automatic closure' when holding the hood about a foot or so above the closed position and letting it fall on its own, instead of applying any pressure, an important feature on a light-weight hood like the GT500's.Thanks for providing this product. It's CLEAN in its appearance and EXCELLENT in its functionality.

The best of both worlds.
